In the United States, Inspectors General (IG) have a 210 year history of inspecting, auditing, investigating, training, and performing duties necessary to support the missions of their respective organizations.  (see History)

In that tradition, the California State Military Department IG is an extension of the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of The Adjutant General. The State Military Department IG is a personal staff officer providing The Adjutant General with a sounding board for sensitive issues. IGs are honest brokers and consummate fact finders. Their primary functions are training, assisting, inspecting, and investigating.

The State Military Department IG operates within an environment consisting of the State Military Department, its State Civil Service employees, State Active Duty personnel, The State Military Reserve (SMR), retirees, and other civilians needing assistance with a State Military Department matter, activity or process. The State Military Department IG is sufficiently independent so that those requesting assistance will do so, even when the complainant feels that intermediary and senior supervisors may be the problem. Therefore, the State Military Department's IG must maintain a clear distinction between being an extension of The Adjutant General and a sworn duty to serve as a fair and impartial fact finder and problem solver.
