National Guard Support to Customs and Border Patrol Helps Secure Southern Border

Operation JUMPSTART Overview 

The California National Guard organized TASK FORCE VISTA in response to the Governor’s support to
the President’s request for assistance to the US Customs and Border Patrol agency. There are over
1,300 Army and Air National Guard volunteers currently supporting this mission in eight general mission
areas, to include operations, air support, ground transportation, command and control, base operations,
maintenance, civil engineering, and ports of entry augmentation.

National Guard Support to Customs and Border Patrol Helps Secure Southern Border

EL CENTRO, Calif. – The day isn’t complete until Sgt. 1st Class Alan Travelstead’s
band of hands completes its dirty deed.

The platoon leader for the California National Guard’s motor pool unit based here
for Operation Jump Start speaks positively about Joint Task Force Vista’s assistance
to the California Customs and Border Patrol. Travelstead oversees a gung-ho crew of
motor vehicle mechanics, a crew that has earned notoriety since June’s inception for
the southwest border mission.

Guard Civil Engineers Strenthen Border

Supporting Operation Jump Start, 27 Air National Guard Civil Engineers from the 163d Air
Refueling Wing, March Air Refueling Base, CA deployed to the San Diego border August 5-19
as part of their two-week annual training.

 Fast Track

California Guard Deploys for Operation Jump Start on a Fast Track

The California National Guard has responded once again in a timely manner to the
governor’s call. Just ten short weeks following President Bush’s request for governors
to help secure the borders with National Guard troops, Joint Task Force VISTA had formed
with more than 1000 Soldiers and Airmen on orders for Operation Jump Start – the SW
Border Mission. Nationwide, 6,000 National Guard troops, primarily from the four border
states, are being deployed along the Southwest border.

Task Force Vista

Task Force Vista, Border Mission, is a federally funded mission in which the
California National Guard (CNG) will support the Customs and Border Patrol.
CNG forces will provide support in eight general mission areas, to include
operations, air support, ground transportation, command and control, base
operations, maintenance, civil engineering, and ports of entry augmentation.
