California maintains a comprehensive mental health program for soldiers and airmen. We care about your psychological and emotional well-being and take proactive measures to assist both service members and their families in dealing with such issues. The California National Guard (CNG) Mental Health Office is staffed by:

    • Director, Mental Health -  Major Eric Frye, LCSW BCD
    • State Psychologist - Major Mike Masters, Ph.D

The Mental Health Office maintains full-time operations at JFHQ in Sacramento and part-time operations at both Los Alamitos Joint Force Training Base and Fort Irwin.  Additionally, the CNG Mental Health Office is continually building a team of CNG and SMR mental health personnel serving as Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists on a part-time basis.

Embedded Mental Health Pilot Program –  The CNG is part of a pilot program hosted by Tri West. The program places contracted mental health professionals directly in units of the CNG. Currently, we have providers in 38 armories across the state. These providers participate in all IDT unit level training and serve as a wonderful on site mental health asset. Additionally, the CNG is placing SMR mental health professionals as embeds into units across the state. If you are interested in learning more about this program or in placing a contractor within your unit, please contact us!

Combat Stress Team –  The Combat Stress Team provides valuable training, screening, counseling, and intervention for units across the state.
