Throughout the year Training Site Los Alamitos Department of Public Works (DPW) maintains the infrastructure of Joint Force Training Base Los Alamitos.  DPW is comprised of members of the California Army National Guard (CANG), a USN Seabee augment detachment and a day time staff of civilian workers.  This joint environment is not common to most CANG units but is a great asset to this base because it increases the capabilities of the group as a whole.  This group is basically a small construction company whose only limitations is due to time constraints since CANG members and Seabee’s practice their trade only two days out of the month and two weeks during the summer during their Annual Training Duty (ATD).  Monthly projects are chosen not only to train the soldiers but to help maintain the base. DPW soldiers are trained in several military occupational skills or MOS’s including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, masons, surveyor-draftsman, heavy equipment operators and building inspectors.  The base which was constructed prior to WWII provides a great training ground for the soldiers to practice their construction trade. Like an old house, you will never run out of projects on this base.

This years ATD project was the relocation of a 1,000 sq. ft. prefab building called a Butler Building from its current location within the old Navy Housing Area on base to a new location where it could once again provide a use.  This building had not been used for at least 15 years and had fallen into disrepair. The work performed included: grading and trenching the new site, pouring of a 6” thick concrete slab foundation, disassembly of the existing building into individual steel panels, utility hook ups for lighting and sewage, reassembly of the structure at its new location, paint exterior of building and construct a new interior bathroom.  Now completed, this building will once again be a valuable resource to the base.
