The California National Guard - Always Ready, Always There

Ground Tactical Support

CAPABILITIES:
TWO is primarily comprised of soldiers trained in infantry skills and taught the sophisticated techniques for operating high-tech night vision, reconnaissance and land navigation equipment. These soldiers conduct observation missions in remote, rural and semi-rural areas for long periods of time. They are self-sustained and trained to carry all the supplies and equipment they need to survive for days at a time. TWO is able to provide Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) with personnel and equipment to conduct counterdrug support operations year round.

PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS:
Asset Availability: Ground tactical teams are available for missions year round. Demand for assistance is significantly higher from June through October, limiting availability.

Ground Reconnaissance/ Observation: Ground reconnaissance refers to mobile patrols covering a Named Area of Interest (NAI) to locate and gather information (example: search for a cannabis garden). Ground observation refers to establishing an Observation Post (OP) to monitor a specific area for drug activity. OPs are used to monitor drug trafficking of ground and air corridors, clandestine airstrips, clandestine drug laboratories, marijuana gardens, road networks, and coastal locations. These teams can conduct communications surveys, determine suspect drug related traffic schedules or patterns, select optimum locations for the OP, routes in and out of the designated areas, landing zones, and perform terrain analysis. Teams are equipped with a variety of night vision devices, cameras, long-range/short range thermal imagery systems, and law enforcement compatible radio communications. Teams cannot be used to gather intelligence on, or identify specific US citizens. Their mission is to report all activity within a NAI designated by the supported LEA.

Attended Sensor Support: The NG has two types of sensors, Seismic and Doppler, which are used to monitor a NAI designated by the supported LEA.
The sensors can also be employed to provide additional security during other counterdrug missions. Relays are available to allow sensors to be monitored from remote locations.

Mobile Training Teams: Training teams can deploy to conduct classes in patrolling, land navigation, OP techniques, helicopter operations, communication procedures, and additional counterdrug-related subjects. The intent of this support is to develop a base for future operations between the NG and LEAs.

Metal Detection Missions: Metal detection missions employ mine and metal detectors to locate buried drug-related items. This support can assist in locating drugs, precursor chemicals, weapons or other articles that may be buried in metal containers or have metal attached.

LAV Support: TWO is equipped with two Light Armored Vehicles (LAVs) for use by LEAs. TWO will provide the driver and the support crew. The LAV can operate as a mobile command post, or be used for officer delivery for warrant services, and officer down rescue/extraction.
