
Grizzly Youth Academy & What We Do.
In the early 1990's, Congress recognized the inherent community strengths of the National Guard as well as its ability to train, lead and mentor young people in a caring yet disciplined environment. Congress enacted legislation authorizing the National Guard, as part of its domestic mission, to conduct the ChalleNGe program. The mission; intervene in the life of an at-risk youth and produce a program graduate with the values, skills, education and self discipline necessary to succeed as an adult. The program was expanded to include California in 1998, creating the Grizzly Youth Academy at Camp San Luis Obispo.
The Youth ChalleNGe Program is a volunteer program. However, the applicant must be motivated and committed to turning his/her life around through this "Second Chance." Each applicant must meet the following criteria:

A United States citizen or legal resident and reside in California

16 to 18 years of age upon program entry

Unemployed or underemployed
-
Free from illegal drugs/substances
-
Free from any serious involvement with the criminal justice system

Physically and mentally capable of completing the program

A high school drop-out or "at risk" of dropping out
The ChalleNGe Program consists of three phases; a 2-week Pre-ChalleNGe Phase, a 20-week Residential ChalleNGe Phase, and a 12 month Post-Residential Phase. The ChalleNGe Core Components are as follows:
