The Army Guard Chaplaincy provides for professional growth and development throughout the Army Chaplain's career. The following courses are identified and listed in the order they are to be taken.

Chaplain Officer Basic Course. This is for all chaplains and chaplain candidates entering reserve or active duty. There are four sections to the Reserve Basic Course:

Common Core (4 weeks)
Phase 1 (2 weeks)
Phase 2 (3 weeks)
Phase 3 (3 weeks)

These phases are to be completed within two years of the date of the Chaplain's commissioning. This course is required for promotion to Captain.

Chaplain Officer Advanced Course. This is for all chaplains, normally around the 6th year of service. Reserve component chaplains receive this training through a combination of resident and correspondence phases after completion of the Chaplain Officer Basic Course.

Command and General Staff College. This two-year reserve school is normally started in the 12th year of service. The reserve course consists of two phases which are either correspondence or local resident courses. In addition there are two-week phases taken during two different summers.
